Travel Spotlight: Grand Cayman

A friend and I celebrated joint birthdays in March with a big group trip to Grand Cayman. There were 9 of us so we rented a villa in Rum Point. The life of the island is at Seven Mile Beach, which is an hour drive from Rum Point, so I wouldn’t recommend booking here unless you’re after space to spread out. I liked the more quiet, private location and having our own beach and dock right off of the house, but if you plan to go out on Seven Mile Beach every night, then a condo or hotel would be a better bet. There is a ferry that goes across from Rum Point to Seven Mile Beach but the schedule is limited.

To Do

  • Scuba Diving: because of the windy and rough conditions and more work than I was hoping to have while away, I was only able to do one dive. It was a great wreck dive of the Kittiwake - this submarine rescue vessel was in service from 1945-1994 and in 1986, recovered the black box from the Challenger disaster. It’s a shallow and easy dive, only 75 feet (23 meters) max depth.
  • Boat/Jet Skis: you can’t come to an island and not spend at least one day on the water. There are tons of companies for private boat charters (half or full day) and sunset sails. We opted for a morning boat charter with jet ski rental.
  • Stingrays: like in Antigua, there is an area where the stingrays will come out to the boats expecting food. We also had a stingray friend, Stumpy, come visit us on one of our stops for swimming and jet skiing on our boat day. They are so cute and friendly.
  • Beach Bars
    • Coccoloba (Seven Mile Beach) - great happy hour
    • Kaibo (Rum Point) - super chill, hammocks, lots of seating and tables, corn hole
    • Tillie’s (Seven Mile Beach) - great vibe, delicious ceviche, quality champagne
  • Water Activities: The nice part of staying on a quiet bay was the ability to kayak, stand-up paddle board, and snorkel right off of our private beach. You can find many places on the island to do these activities regardless of where you stay though.

Pro Tips

March is a windy month. I’d suggest booking mid-April or later. We had fewer days to do water activities because of the rough conditions caused by the winds on some days.

Avoid The Lobster Pot - food was pricey and mediocre at best. Not sure how it has such good reviews. We were all definitely underwhelmed.

If you want quality in-villa food without paying for a private chef, Tom Foodery Kitchen has family-style offerings that can be delivered hot or ready to be heated. It was the best meal we had on the island and in the comfort of our villa.
