Travel Spotlight: Medellín, Colombia

In September I went to Medellín, Colombia and absolutely fell in love. Perfect weather (I described it as San Diego weather but with rain) that allows for outdoor life year-round, fantastic food, friendly people, lush plant life all around, colorful architecture, and abundant travel options. I definitely plan to go back (and hopefully even buy an apartment there!)

Explore Medellín

  • Wander around the streets of El Poblado - green, lush, charming architecture, great bars and restaurants.
  • Provenza is a super cute area with a ton of bars and restaurants. Nice in both daytime and evening but it is the most full of life at night. Definitely the place to go for drinks, people watch, and just walk around. There is so much energy here. You can walk from here down to Parque Lleras as well.
  • Do a guided walking tour of Comuna 13 to see the vibrant street art and learn about its storied past.

Eat and Drink

  • Alambique - this was my favorite place. Super charming space, excellent drinks, good food, friendly staff.
  • El Cielo - I didn’t make it here because it was booked up 2 weeks out but it’s a Michelin chef who opened up a second location in DC. It’s supposed to be incredible and is far less expensive in Medellín than DC!
  • Rocoto Cocina Peruana - great ceviche (go for lunch).
  • Jura Kub - interesting drinks with very unique presentations.
  • Justo - vegan restaurant with a really creative menu.
  • Order Almeria Alfajores to bring home. Best alfajores I have ever had.

Travel to a Nearby Mountain Town

  • Guatapé - I stayed at an incredible resort called Bosko - domes perched on a cliff overlooking part of Guatapé’s massive reservoir. Definitely visit the colorful town center and climb the 650 steps to the top of La Piedra (aka El Peñon) for the most insane views! Spend the rest of your time enjoying the resort.
  • Jardín - This is the most colorful town surrounded by mountains. Accommodation is really inexpensive and I took the bus there which was around $10 each way. I loved how everyone in these little towns hangs out at the town square all day and night, having coffee and beer. So charming.
